What is Wizard101?
Wizard101 is a fantasy MMORPG from KingsIsle Entertainment, a member of the gamigo group. You play a student at the Ravenwood School of Magical Arts and pick one of seven schools of magic: Balance, Myth, Storm, Fire, Ice, Life or Death. Combat is turn-based: you collect spell cards, build a deck, adjust it before each battle and fight alone or with friends. Steam's listing mentions more than 22 worlds, over a thousand hours of questing, fully voiced characters and side systems such as pets, crafting, gardening, fishing and housing.
PvP takes place in the arena, in ranked 1v1 or team battles and in tournaments with special rules, and events rotate weekly. KingsIsle celebrated the game's 18th birthday on August 31, 2026, and is teasing a new world, Ahmarra, for fall 2026. The most recent content update, Barkingham Chronicle, arrived on July 1, 2026, with new spells, a new boss and Challenge Mode instances on the North American server.
Is Wizard101 free to play?
Partly. The game is free to download and start: Steam lists it as Free To Play and notes that certain areas require an in-game purchase to progress. KingsIsle's zone pricing page lists the opening areas of Wizard City, such as the Commons, Ravenwood, Unicorn Way, Triton Avenue and Nightside, as free, according to an archived copy of the page from February 2026.
Beyond those areas you have two options. A membership opens the paid areas for as long as it stays active. Pay as You Go lets you buy individual zones with Crowns instead; a purchased zone stays unlocked for good and works for the characters on that account. KingsIsle's Crowns page says that for free-to-play wizards, Crowns open up the whole world.
KingsIsle also runs free membership periods. For the game's birthday, all accounts were treated as members from September 1 to 7, 2026.
Is Wizard101 pay to win? What money buys
As of October 30, 2026, KingsIsle lists regular PC membership at $9.95 a month, or $6.95 a month per account on Family plans, and monthly memberships renew automatically. The PlayStation Store lists Crown packs from 2,500 for $4.99 to 80,000 for $74.99 (discounted from $99.99) and an Arc 1 Access Pass for $19.99, and Steam sells a Classic Steamboat Mount for $9.99.
Per KingsIsle, the Crown Shop sells gear and premium items, Henchmen who help in tough boss battles and mounts that move 40% faster, besides unlocking zones. Packs are random: the Barkingham Chronicle Pack gives a chance at new spellements, gear and puppy pets. The console ESRB listing flags In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items), and no official page lists pack odds. Wizard101 also has ranked arena PvP, with 1v1 and team battles.
Based on what the official stores sell, we rate it as strongly pay to win; we will check this again when we play it ourselves.
Wizard101 on PC, Mac, consoles and mobile
On computers, Wizard101 runs on Windows and macOS. KingsIsle's system requirements page offers downloads for both and says the game will not run on iPads, iPhones, Android devices or Linux. Steam carries a Windows version published by KingsIsle and gamigo; since November 13, 2024, North American Steam players install all game files at once instead of downloading them during play.
On consoles, Wizard101 launched on Xbox and PlayStation on October 9, 2025, and on Nintendo Switch on January 13, 2026, and the PlayStation Store lists it as free. KingsIsle's console FAQ says console players can play together across consoles, but there is no crossplay with PC, PC and console accounts stay separate, and PC membership does not carry over. On consoles, membership comes as 1-month and 6-month elixirs in the Crown Shop, and zones can be bought one by one.
Wizard101 system requirements
Steam lists this Windows minimum: 64-bit Windows 10, a 2 GHz processor, 4 GB of RAM, Intel integrated graphics (which need an additional 1 to 2 GB of RAM), DirectX 9.0c, a broadband connection and 33 GB of available storage. Steam gives no recommended tier. It notes that the game may run on older operating systems, but they are not supported, and asks players to keep graphics drivers updated.
KingsIsle's own system requirements page, last updated October 10, 2026, lists 64-bit Windows 10 and macOS Big Sur and provides a download for each. It also states that Wizard101 does not run on iPads, iPhones, Android devices or Linux, so a Windows PC, a Mac or one of the supported consoles is needed.
