What is Grepolis?

Grepolis is a free real-time strategy MMO set in ancient Greece, developed and published by InnoGames. You start with a small polis and build it into a metropolis with 13 buildings and 8 monuments, research more than 30 technologies in the Academy and recruit armies on land and sea, including mythical units such as the Hydra, Pegasus and Manticore. Cities can be placed under a god, such as Zeus, Poseidon, Hera, Athena or Hades, whose powers help the economy or the war effort. The App Store listing adds heroes such as Leonidas and Hercules and 27 unit types.

Play happens on numbered worlds with their own settings. Echidnara, which opened on September 29, 2026, runs at speed 2 with seven days of beginner protection, a 50-member alliance limit, the revolt conquest system and a Domination endgame, plus an Artifact reward for winners. InnoGames celebrated the game's 17th birthday in September 2026.

Is Grepolis free to play?

Yes. InnoGames says Grepolis is free to play without restrictions, the browser version needs no download, and the App Store and Google Play list the app as free with in-app purchases. The support site adds that certain premium functions can only be unlocked with Gold, the premium currency.

Gold is not only bought. Per InnoGames' support pages, you can trade resources for Gold on the market once you have a second city and a marketplace (up to 200 Gold per trade, on worlds opened after February 10, 2015), earn 200 Gold when an invited friend reaches 3,000 points, and win Gold in giveaways. Events also reward normal play: in Incantation Circle 2026, offerings come from building, recruiting, research, attacks and spells, up to 10 free offerings a day, and Tyche's Wheel of Fortune has a free Event Pass lane.

Is Grepolis pay to win? What money buys

As of October 30, 2026, the US App Store lists Gold from 440 for $4.99 to 20,000 for $79.99, plus special package offers at $9.99 and $19.99.

Gold activates five advisors, per InnoGames' support site. The Commander makes land units fight 20% stronger, the Captain does the same for naval units, the High Priestess raises favor production by 50% and makes mythical units 20% stronger, the Merchant adds 30% to base resource production, and the Administrator adds five building-queue slots. Gold also instantly completes buildings, research, unit recruitment and hero healing (units and heroes not in the last five minutes before an attack lands) and extends divine powers for 20 Gold.

Events add random paid items. In Tyche's Wheel of Fortune, extra spins use Tyche Coins bought with Gold, prizes include unit reinforcement spells and a permanent defense bonus, and a paid Event Pass lane adds prizes. No odds are listed.

Based on what the official stores sell, we rate it as strongly pay to win; we will check this again when we play it ourselves.

Grepolis on PC, Mac and mobile

On a computer, Grepolis is a browser game: you play at grepolis.com in a web browser without installing anything, and the App Store listing points players to the PC browser version. There is no Steam, Epic Games Store or console version.

On phones and tablets, InnoGames offers Grepolis - Divine Strategy MMO for iOS and Android, and the App Store version also runs on Macs with an Apple M1 chip or later. InnoGames' support site calls the app a companion that does not fully replace the browser version: it focuses on key features such as attacking and defending on the go, and some complex or convenience features will likely never come to it. The support site also has an entry on why premium offers differ between the browser and the app.

Grepolis system requirements

As a browser game, Grepolis has no PC download and no published hardware minimum; InnoGames says its browser titles need no download.

For the apps, the US App Store requires iOS or iPadOS 13.0 or later, or macOS 11.0 or later on a Mac with an Apple M1 chip or later, and lists an 82 MB download. InnoGames' support site lists Android 7.1.1 or later with a screen density of 160 dpi or higher, and notes that the app is not available on Android devices without Google Play, such as some Huawei models.

That support page still mentions iOS 10 for the older Grepolis Classic App, but the current App Store listing asks for iOS 13.0, so go by the store page.
