This Drakensang Online review is based on official sources and player reviews, not on our own play time. Bigpoint's action MMORPG has run since 2011 and has been on Steam for Windows since May 16, 2023. You play one of four classes in the world of Dracania, alone or in groups, with PvP duels and group battles. Money buys Andermant packages, Season Pass and Lucky Pass tracks, chests and shop bundles that include stat-raising pets and jewels.

What is Drakensang Online?

Drakensang Online is a free-to-play action RPG built around classic MMORPG systems. Bigpoint GmbH of Hamburg develops and publishes it; Bigpoint says it was made at its Berlin studio on its own Nebula engine. The game marked its 15th anniversary in September 2026, and Bigpoint added it to Steam on May 16, 2023.

You pick one of four classes: the Dragonknight for close combat, the Spellweaver for fire, ice and lightning magic, the Ranger with blade bows, or the Steam Mechanicus with firearms and rocket packs. Quests and dungeons run across Dracania, from the Grimmagstone Caves to the Prison of Souls, and you can play them alone or with other players. Sands of Malice and Rise of Balor are the two expansions named on the official site.

PvP comes as duels and group battles, and the Steam page mentions a PvP arena. Live events change every few weeks. The current one, Return of Dragan, runs from October 12 to November 12, 2026 and adds a new jewel for the End of the Empire set and a craftable mount.

Is Drakensang Online free to play?

Yes. The official site calls it "the free to play action MMORPG," and Steam lists it as Free To Play. Event items such as the new Jewel of Dark Magicke are crafted from materials that drop from monsters, statues and chests during the event, so they can be earned without buying anything.

The passes have free tracks. The September 2026 Lucky Pass had a free track for every hero, and in Season 4 of the Season Pass the free track paid out 19 days of Premium, 600 Season Coins, 1,500 Draken and seven Challenge Passes. Andermant, the shop currency, also comes from play: PvE Season leaderboards award it, and the 2025 Ghost Festival rune raised its drop rate.

The official news posts often carry free bonus codes; the Return of Dragan code 2PEARLS, for example, gives two Empowered Cursed Pearls until November 12, 2026.

Is Drakensang Online pay to win? What money buys

Andermant buys items in the shop. During Black Friday 2025, a Key of the Greed Fiend cost 1,000 Andermant and potions that doubled or tripled that chest's drops cost 10,000 and 18,000 Andermant. Bigpoint's Black Friday packages included gems, jewels, runes and Andermant, and the Queen's Chest bundles were priced from €99.99 to €199.99.

Shop bundles can raise combat stats. The 2026 Anniversary Pet Chest, priced at €6.99, guaranteed the Sepp Huber pet, which adds 25% damage, 10% attack speed and 10% critical hit chance. The Season Pass has paid Gold and Red tracks; in Season 7, double-reward versions cost €29.99 and €39.99 per character. The September Lucky Pass premium track cost $19.99. Premium and Deluxe Membership time also exists, though no official price page was found.

Some chest announcements list chances, such as the Greed Fiend's Legacy (for example, 30% for 999 Essence of Vigor) and the bonus items in the Pet Chest, but there is no general odds page. PvP duels, group battles and the arena use the same characters.

Based on what the official stores sell, we rate it as strongly pay to win; we will check this again when we play it ourselves.

Drakensang Online on PC, Mac, consoles and mobile

Today Drakensang Online is a Windows game. Steam lists Windows only, from Windows 7 up, with DirectX 9. The official site also has Play now and Download buttons, but both lead to a Bigpoint login, so you need an account before the client download appears.

Bigpoint's company page describes the game as having launched on both client and browser. No current official page confirms that browser or Mac play still works, and there is no console or mobile version.

If you link a Bigpoint account to Steam, the official Steam post says you can then reach the shop only through the Steam client and pay through Steam; other payment methods return an error. Steam lists 14 languages, including English, German, French, Spanish, Polish and Turkish. Bigpoint's support contact form notes that the team handles requests in German and English only.

Drakensang Online system requirements

Steam lists modest requirements, and both tiers ask for a broadband connection.

Minimum: Windows 7 or later, a dual-core Intel or AMD processor at 2.8 GHz, 4 GB of RAM, an NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450 or AMD Radeon HD 5750 or better, DirectX 9.0 and 1 GB of free storage.

Recommended: Windows 7 or later, a dual-core Intel or AMD processor at 2.8 GHz, 8 GB of RAM, an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 or AMD Radeon HD 7800 or better, DirectX 10 and 2 GB of storage.

The official site does not publish a separate requirements page that can be opened without logging in, so the Steam listing is the reference here. Both tiers name the same dual-core 2.8 GHz processor and Windows 7 or later; only memory, graphics, DirectX version and storage change.
